Same Sex Marriage
The United States Supreme Court issued an important opinion on same sex marriage on June 26, 2015. In the case Obergefell v. Hodges the Court held that the Fourteenth Amendment requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-state. ( Docket No.14-556). The decision was 5-4. The majority consisted of Justices Kennedy ( who wrote the opinion), Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan. The dissent consisted of Justices Roberts, Scalia, Thomas and Alito. This opinion reversed an opinion by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
