Steps in obtaining NJ Teacher Certification
Basic Skills Assessment for program entry to Teacher Preparation programs
By September 1, 2015, candidates beginning teacher preparation program coursework must pass a Basic Skills Assessment. This requirement applies to on or after September 1, 2015. For acceptance into a teacher preparation program, a candidate must pass a 'Commissioner-approved test of basic reading, writing, mathematics skills.' Currently, there are two tests that are acceptable: the Praxis Pre-Professional Skills Test (Praxis I) and Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Praxis Core).
Praxis™: Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core)
These tests measure academic skills in reading, writing and mathematics. They were designed to provide comprehensive assessments that measure the skills and content knowledge of candidates entering teacher preparation programs. The test: Core Academic skills for Educators( 5751) has three sections: Reading (5712), Writing ( 5722) and Mathematics (5732). To take all three Core tests on the same date, please register for the 5751 – Core Academic Skills for Educators: Combined Test.
