Testing in online courses
Currently, PCCC requires that some exams and tests in online classes be taken by students in an in-person, proctored environment. Some academic departments, such as Science, Math and Health Information Technology have mandated that final exams for all online classes must be taken in person. In other departments, decisions to require final exams or multiple exams throughout the semester are made by individual instructors. The exact list of courses which require such in-person testing may change slightly from semester to semester, but students may learn exactly which online classes require this either by through the college’s online Course Schedule or through the drop-down menu of choices found in the Distance Education Department’s online Request for Registration form.
There is no additional charge or fee for students who elect to take their in-person, proctored exams at a PCCC campus. Exams may be taken at the Paterson or Wanaque campuses and limited availability for test-taking is also available at the Passaic campus as well. Within the available window for taking a specific exam, students must self-schedule their exam dates and times through the Test Appointment Scheduler maintained by the PCCC Testing Department. Please see the Academic Testing tab on the PCCC Testing Department’s LibGuide web pages.
Student may opt to take any required in-person, proctored exam testing at a non-PCCC location as well. This may be the only possibility for students with disabilities, students who live at a considerable distance from a PCCC campus or are serving in the armed forces. In such situations, it is the responsibility of the student to find a physical testing location and proctor who is acceptable to the class instructor in advance of any tests. Specific qualifications for such locations and proctors are entirely determined by each faculty member and may change from course to course. Please note that any cost for taking in-person, proctored tests at a non-PCCC are entirely the responsibility of the student and not PCCC.
The following is a list of locations approved by the National College Testing Association While PCCC does not endorse or automatically accept any of these testing sites, this list should provide students with a good start for finding a non-PCCC testing location.
Except for the specific courses which require in-person, proctored testing, all other online courses deliver assessments online through the online course itself in Blackboard. As new technologies are developed and adopted which monitor the security of online test-taking, any additional expense to students will be made to PCCC students one semester in advance of the imposition of any additional fee and the technological requirements of any software or hardware involved will be posted in a prominent location to students at the time of registration.
