General Description of Near Death Experiences

People near death or at times "clinically dead" for a short time have reported going through experiences once they recovered.   These widely recorded experiences have certain common characteristics.  While these experiences are often positive, some are terrible.   Most of the time, people who have near death experiences report feeling a great sense of peace.  They experience flying rapidly through darkness ( often a tunnel) toward an intensely bright light.   They may have out of body experiences and see themselves being treated by a medical staff.   They may have a life review.  They often encounter deceased friends or  relatives who communicate with them.  Some have described another existence or "world" in great detail.   Many have stated that they were reluctant to return to their bodies.   Those who have had these profound experiences are strongly  convinced that they were not dreams.   However, others explain these experiences in physical terms  i.e. the brain's reaction to approaching death.   Regardless of one's opinion on this issue, it is clear that Near Death Experiences occur and profoundly affect those who have them.
