About PCCC's Writing Connections

ripplesThe Passaic County Community College Writing Initiative was started as part of a five-year grant through the Department of Education’s Strengthening Hispanic Serving Institutions Program (Title V). It is aimed at increasing achievement and program completion rates of students by integrating critical thinking, information literacy and technology into writing.

A portion of the Title V grant was used to construct a new college-level Writing Center (opened in January 2009) at the college specifically to support students in our new Writing Intensive courses.

As part of this Initiative, we have launched the Writing Connections program to reach out and collaborate with the area high schools that send students to the college, and to connect with the 4-year colleges where our students often matriculate after completing their Associate degrees.  We hope to  to share the best practices in teaching writing across institutions and foster writing as an ongoing practice.

Research shows that integration of critical thinking and writing skills into all classrooms helps student performance and understanding. The Initiative has created Faculty Institutes for PCCC faculty that offer hands-on, collaborative activities designed to strengthen the integration of critical thinking and writing skills in general educations courses. Teachers learn classroom action-research activities and strategies for gaining immediate feedback on student learning.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, we held two workshops for area high school teachers about writing across disciplines.

In 2011, we initiated the College Writing Connections with writing programs, writing centers and writing instructors at other 2 and 4-year colleges in NJ.
